UV index

The UV Index is a standardized scale used to measure the strength of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun at a specific time and place. It helps people gauge the potential risk of overexposure to UV rays, which can cause sunburn, skin damage, and increase the risk of skin cancer. The index ranges from 0 to 11+, with higher values indicating stronger UV radiation and a greater risk of harm from sun exposure.

It is important to understand that the weather app & other weather agencies are only estimating UV index - and what is reported by various agencies might not always be accurate.

Factors Influencing the UV Index:

  • Time of Day: UV radiation is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun is highest in the sky.

  • Season: The UV Index is higher in the summer months because the sun’s rays hit the Earth more directly.

  • Latitude: Locations closer to the equator experience higher UV Index values due to the sun being more directly overhead.

  • Altitude: Higher elevations have stronger UV radiation because the atmosphere is thinner and less effective at filtering UV rays.

  • Weather: Clear skies result in higher UV Index values, while cloudy or overcast conditions can lower the UV Index. However, UV radiation can still penetrate through clouds to some extent.

  • Ozone Layer: The thickness of the ozone layer affects how much UV radiation reaches the Earth's surface. Thinning of the ozone layer leads to higher UV Index levels.

The UV Index is a useful tool for helping individuals gauge how much time they choose to spend in UV light by adjusting their sun exposure and seeking shade when desired exposure time has been reached.
